You know the "Five Second Rule"? - If you drop food on the floor, you have five seconds to reclaim it before it's contaminated. . . Well, according to the "Toolkit" newsletter sent out by Mennonite Mutual Aid(all I have is a hard copy. I couldn't find a link), two Connecticut college seniors, with their microbiology professor's guidance, had fun putting that rule to a test. The biology major students dropped food onto the college's busy cafeteria floor, then measured how long it took for bacteria to form. Their "wet" food, an apple slice, didn't attract bacteria for one minute on the floor, while their dry food, Skittles candy, was safe for five minutes.
Maybe you don't want to try this at home.
