Running Up the Score

I just read a story on Fox News about a high school girls basketball game. The score at the end of the game was 100 - 0. Check out the article here. Now the coach of the team that scored 100 points has been fired. I was on the losing end of a basketball game in which the winners scored 100 points. Unlike this case, we were able to score. However, the opposing team kept their starters and full court press throughout the entire game. I don't know the background of this game, but I find it hard to believe that any team would HAVE to score 100 points. On the other side, I think we have gone a bit far when we talk about being fair, etc. We are NOT all created equally. We each have gifts and abilities which are quite different from others. We are loved equally, but not created equally. We are all important, but we are different. Sooooooo. . . I don't know what to think. I would love to hear from you.

Well I do recall a time in my basketball career that we stalled the ball so the other team wouldn't score 100 on us but I think we did have at least 25 points (of which I had at least 18). Anyway - I think that is bad coaching if you allow your team to score 100 and the other team 0. He could have had his team have to make 5 passes before they shot...did they press the whole time - if so that is horrible...did they leave their starters in - if so again that is horrible. I guess I should read the article before I comment but here are my comments anyway

I remember a game when I was coaching and my girls were shutting out the opposition at half time. I told them they had to stand in the lane in the second half and only hold their hands up and rebound - if they came out of the lane to make a steal, they were coming out of the game. They were really upset that they couldn't go for the shutout but the kids on the other team were so excited about scoring and making the game a little respectable in the second half that it made it all worthwhile.

We need to stop worrying about hurting everyone's feelings in sports. I dont agree that you should win 100-0 but for the guy to lose his job is a bit much. When you play a sport you come to compete, some days you win and some you lose...but either way there shouldnt be stipulations. Yes, be sportsman like...but lets not turn everything into a socialist gov't...everyone is NOT created equal, deal with it.
